Every industry is going through a rigorous transformation which makes their functionality efficient, effective and productive. The steel industry is no exception as there have been numerous changes, upgradation and modernisation in the steel industry as well. The main cause of such change is technological advancement. Steel has been in production for ages with traditional methodologies galore. But the technological effectiveness introduced an entirely new dimension to the steel-making process.
Despite all challenges in the steel industry such as evolving customer demands, geopolitical uncertainty, the impact of e-mobility, and the effect of digitalisation, etc. there are some technologies which provide more efficient processes, higher quality steels, environmental-friendly production, quality consistency, etc. To summarise the technological advancement here are 4 new methods.
– Molten Oxide Electrolysis –
It is an unconventional electrometallurgical system that allows quick production of metal in the liquid state from oxide raw material which is unusual in regular processes. It promises considerable simplification of the whole production process. Molten Oxide Electrolysis has been proven to utilise anode materials for use with iron. It is needed to overcome several challenges to produce metal without processing carbon.
– Jet Process –
The jet process is designed to take advantage of the chemical energy of coal more efficiently and cost-effectively in the converter than in the basic procedure. In this way, scrap metal additions can be higher without external energy. The high adaptability of the system makes it significantly easier to implement. To increase the feasibility; it is designed a modular converter which enables the fast installation of a conventional BOF converter base.
– Hybrit Process –
The Hybrit (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) process constitutes several advancements that are the utilisation of hydrogen as a decreasing agent, with the hydrogen being generated through electrolysis depending on sustainable power. From a natural point of view, the most significant benefit of this is the fumes from this procedure is water rather than carbon dioxide which is more environmentally friendly.
– The ORC Technology –
The Organic Rankine Cycle depends on a running turbo generator. It transforms heat energy into mechanical energy and then electrical energy at last. The difference is proved-that rather than creating steam from water, the ORC technology vaporises the natural liquid. Hence, it provides a slower movement of the turbine, reduces pressure, and no abrasion of the metal parts and sharp edges.
The basic steel production in the steel industry and its processes are based on three steps which are raw material preparation, then iron making and ultimately steelmaking. All these processes can be finished with many different types of steels for specific needs. The technological advancement as mentioned methods develops the new process for efficient, nature-friendly and optimum steel making procedure. The traditional methods of steelmaking- BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace) and the more present-day EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) get alternatives in the coming future.
